As you’ve seen in the book “Professional Front-end Architecture”, architects we need both depth and breadth of knowledge. Jake and Surma (who I believe do not need further introduction) just released a very nice video-series on Youtube called “Best web features of 2018”.
Besides being entertaining, that series also help us recap what happened this year in the front-end world. They also presented their points of view regarding the importance and maturity of those technologies. That kind of critics-review is exactly what we should be doing on a daily basis as architects as we read our news feed, W3C and TC39 proposals and updates, etc.
Other questions we could ask ourselves are: Could those new technologies make obsolete parts of our chosen frameworks or libraries? Would they have any impact over our ADRs (Architectural Decision Records)? Could we implement any of them now, and provide backwards compatibility through polyfills in order to avoid re-work the near future? And so on.
Congratulations Jake and Surma! That kind of material is invaluable to inform front-end developers, architects, and managers… elevating the relevance of their technical decisions and recommendations, as well as the quality of front-end projects across the globe!
